Calico Christmas

I rushed out of school on Friday to get to the Albany Stadium to see the show. I am working as a white glove lady on Sunday at the exhibition so I thought I would do the round of the shops early. I bought a fabulous book of William Morris inspired quilts - I can always imagine these great finished products but the reality is it will probably take me quite a while to create one. It is a very inspiring book though and I really want to try some of the applique projects. I am looking forward to seeing the exhibits on Sunday. I didn't get time to get anything in myself this year.
Here are some pics of my favourite projects from the book.

Rosemary Rush Class Onehunga Oct 2011

Rosemary shared her impeccable quilting secrets with us at the Onehunga Community Centre on Saturday. I didn't really come away with anything finished (as usual) but some good ideas and strategies for quilting. I took some photos of Rosemary's amazing quilts to see how she used quilting stitches and embellishments. I love the way she takes inspiration from artists such as Klimt and Gaudi.

Bays Quilters Retreat at Vaughan Park 2011

Great weekend at Vaughan Park as usual!

I managed to finish lots of unfinished projects and get my hand dyed batik quilted ready for embellishing with beads and threads.
Diana appliqued and quilted some fantastic Mary Transom design wall hangings. They were really beautiful!

Jackie creating another great design, she does such great embroidery on her projects - this one has a Japanese theme and she is doing Sashiko

Hundertwasser designs in Kawakawa township

I went here on the weekend and was blown away by the fantastic Hundertwasser designs everywhere and also the train running down the middle of the road - a steam one too!
G bought me a Hundertwasser book (Tashchen publication) for my birthday. I feel a Hundertwasser inspired art quilt coming on....

Colder mornings!

Winter
Winter is approaching fast. We had a picnic on the beach last night at 5.30pm with friends but could not stay longer than an hour as it got too cold!
I can't believe the term is nearly finished and holidays are only one week away! To celebrate I have started a new project. It is a wall hanging and based on Hazel Foot's lovely tapa cloth quilt which was featured in the NZ Quilter a while back. She also won best in show at Calico Christmas a couple of years ago too. I got a few books from the library showing tapa cloths from all the Pacific Islands and drew up some designs and also copied some of Hazel's as she must have researched too and found the same tapa cloth patterns.
I have been working on this each night after school and can't wait to finish and put it all together! (I must finish some UFO's in the holidays!)

Playing around with slideshow creator

Auckland Guild Day

The Pam Holland retreat girls talked about the retreat and the techniques for portraits. We all had a turn at explaining part of the process.

Here I am explaining the quilting process.

Sharon and Chris thought it was a great laugh!

OK I have to show off!

This is the little madam of the house. Apparently I am told she is a Russian Blue and I have looked at the images of them and she does seem to have those attributes - her fur is very silky and velvety and she has very expressive ears and an elegant run with her long slim legs!
Here is her Cleopatra look!
And yet another pose!

New year dyeing fun

We had a great time at hand dying workshops at my house last week. The first workshop I had the great idea that I would mix the dyes and soda ash bath in front of everyone so they could learn how to do it. That was a bit too much with seven people and took far too long so everyone ended up waiting for new batches of dye. The next workshop went well as I prepared everything before they came so all the dye was mixed and the preparation mix was ready as well as the soda ash bath. I had a much more relaxing time too. It was great to have Jackie's son Oscar helping her and creating interesting tie dye fabrics.
